Tamara Rosalia Gurwik-Gorska (Moscow? 1898 - Cuernavaca, mexico, 1980),aka Tamara De Lempicka (the name is taken from her first husband's name Lempicki) was born probably in Moscaw in 1898 (she always said Warsaw and 1898, while the marriage and death certificate report Moscow 1898) from a rich and noble jewish family. She had an exclusive high-society education in Switzerland and Poland and a tumultous life in a constant sophisticated and wealthy environment which made her an icon of the roaring 1920s and 1930s noble society.
She started painting at the Académie Ranson in Paris in 1920 following an inner inclination and took classes with André Lothe, whom she recognized as her only teacher. By this time she was already married with her first husband Tadeusz Lempicki,a rich and noble Russian lawyer, and had a daughter (born in 1916). Due to her dissipated life (she takes cocain and spend entire nights in bordels and night-clubs), the wedding finishes in 1928.
In 1934 she marries with Baron Raoul Kuffer. She is already an enstablished painter. Her main body of works finish in the early 1940s.
On the psychological level, she starts to be affected by depression early on, reportedly since 1932. Depressions and inner loneliness affect her during most of her life.
Noteworthy Exhibitions:
1924, first two paintings at the Salon des Indépendants, Paris (a portrait and a nude)
1925, First personal exhibition in Milan (Palazzo Reale; trough count Emanuele Castelbarco ); paintings at the Salon des Independants, Salon d'automne.
1930, Personal exhibition, Galerie Colette Weil, Paris
1932: Many collective exhibitions in Paris (Salon des Independants, Salon des Femmes Artistes Moderns, Galerie du théatre Pigalle, Salon des Tuileries, Salon d'automne)
1939, Personal exhibition in New York (without success)
1944, 1950, Paintings at the "Salon d' automne" and "Salon Des Independants", Paris
1972, personal Exhibition in Paris (re-discovering her)
Acquisitions in the 1980s by famous private collectors (e.g. Madonna, Barbara Streisand, Jack Nicholson) raise her popularity.
Next are Tamara Lempicka paintings from the Milan exhibition at Palazzo Reale in 2006, 80 years after she had her first exhibition exactly at the same place.
