Winslow Homer Biography

There is a great post in this forum on Homer watercolor palette.

Someone found an original Winslow Homer watercolor box with dried colors in it, took to the chemical lab to analyse it.

I simplify it here:

L1 & L2 - Organic brown, possibly Van Dyke Brown or Cologne Earth (bituminous earth)
A fugitive pigment.
.

L3 - Red Lake pigment (alizarin and a lesser amount of carminic acid); substrate possibly contains Al and Fe
A fugitive pigment.

L4 - ‘Hooker's Green’ [yellow shift] (a mixture of Prussian Blue and Gamboge)
A fugitive pigment.

L5 - Red Lake pigment (carminic acid and a lesser amount of alizarin); substrate is calcite and possibly also contains Al
A fugitive pigment.

L6 - Red Ochre, Indian Red, or a similar pigment (hematite, quartz)
A permanent pigment.

L7 - Chrome Orange (Pb2CrO5)
A fugitive pigment.

L8 - Vermilion (HgS)
A fugitive pigment.

L9 - Organic brown, possibly Sepia
A fugitive pigment.

R1 - Brown Earth or Burnt Umber (calcite, clay, iron oxides)
A permanent pigment.

R2 - Green Earth (celadonite); bluish tint is due to small amount of Prussian Blue, which is probably a contaminant
A permanent pigment.

R3 - Prussian Blue (Fe4[Fe(CN)6]3), extended with alunite ([K, DNa]Al3[OH]6[SO4]2)
A fugitive pigment.

R4 - Indian Yellow (Mg and Ca salts of euxanthic acid)
A fugitive pigment.

.

R5 - ‘Hooker's Green’ [blue shift] (a mixture of Prussian Blue and Gamboge)
A fugitive pigment.

R6 - Bone Black or Ivory Black (carbon and β-Ca3(PO4)2)
A permanent pigment.

R7 - Vermilion (HgS)
A fugitive pigment.

R8 - Vermilion (HgS)
A fugitive pigment.

R9 - Burnt Siena, Mars Orange, or a similar pigment (hematite, calcite)
A permanent color.
