Before Art Nouveau and especially up until the the Bauhaus experiment, the term "design" for what we mean today (everyday objects in a un unusual beautiful shape) did not exist.
The term is associate with luxury, today. Buying "designed" items such as Alessi's or Foppapedretti, Stokke is an expensive purchase. But not quite if you think of the Ikea brand.
Art Nouveau design is, in my opinion, associated with the following qualities which in turn render the style:
