What makes Celtic Art, Celtic Art? What are the elements of celtic art which make it recognizable at once?
Here they are:
Celtic art is always abstract. It never tries to represent reality.
- Framing. Each piece of design is a separate panel with well-marked border around it.
- The pattern must be complete and not cut off by the border
- Repetitions of the S-shape, the spirals, the triskelion (triple spirals), the svastika, the square, the triangle, are typical of celtic art.
- Interlaced patterns are perhaps the most famous patterns.
It is thought that there are influences from Egyptian art in pattern of celtic type, which in turn the Celts might have picked up after seeing Roman mosaics.
